Grimsel Test Site Videos
FEBEX : Construction video
This video contains sequences from the construction of the Febex tunnel, and emplacing heaters surrounded by bentonite blocks. Re-mastered from the original Digital Video Tapes
See the FEBEX Experiment for more details, and the FEBEX-DP Project for present excavation status.
Long Term Diffusion animation
The LTD project is a series of experiments which aims to obtain quantitative information on matrix diffusion in fractured rock under in situ conditions. The project plans for in situ and laboratory experiments. In addition, a natural tracer study provides information on matrix diffusion processes over geological time scales.
HLW Repository Overview
This video shows the emplacement of a waste canister deep underground (~600m) and the backfilling of the emplacement tunnel with bentonite clay. See FEBEX for research carried out at the Grimsel Test Site (GTS) on the emplacement canister in the bentonite clay.
CRR - Radionuclide Migration Programme
The Radionuclide Migration Programme was a 10 year project carried out in shear zone AU 96 in the GTS along with parallel experiments at JNC's former URL at Kamaishi, north east Japan. The overall aim of the project was to examine the retardation of radionuclides in this shear zone. The first phase of the project involved extensive characterisation of the chemical and physical properties of this shear zone (Geology / Hydrogeology / Hydrology / etc).
The data from the extensive characterisation was used to create models that would predict the behaviour of radionuclides in a repository host rock. These models were then tested by carefully adding safety-relevant radionuclides to the shear zone and observing their in situ retardation behaviour.
Grimsel Tunnels Overview
This video contains a fly-by in 3D of the main project sites within the Grimsel Test Site (GTS). The commentary is in German.
